The word Batarde is the style of Gothic writing used during the 14th to 16th centuries in Northern France and other areas. The Bastarde hand – has flair and is fun to learn. This pairs well with other styles of calligraphy. We will continue our study of calligraphy and the art in use at the time. We will have fun using color in our letters and trying different tools. Materials Needed: pencil, eraser, ruler or T-square, paints and brushes (gouache is preferred but a good quality watercolor will work) white paint, notebook, file folder, a calligraphy marker 2.5mm or a Pilot parallel pen 2.4mm. You can buy a kit from Anne for $45 but it must be ordered at least a week ahead of class.

This new class offers a window into the wonderful world of handmade books and boxes – great for gifts, letters, treasures and happiness. Folding paper and using glue sticks is the easiest way of having fun with color and design. You can be creative in a free and fundamental way. This workshop is designed for all levels. All paper supplies are provided. This class is offered in person and on zoom as well so two ways to have fun! Zoom is recorded. Materials Needed: Scissors, ruler, pencil, glue stick. (If you have a cutting mat or plastic chopping board, bring that.)

Enjoy drawing, painting and gilding your own illuminated capital letter. Learn how to draw a capital letter based on historical examples and then decorate it using imitation metals and paint or pencil crayons. We will learn how the medievalists used traditional tools as well as the modern twists and shortcuts. The workshop includes learning many techniques for shading paint, doing filigree and decorative elements and working with some new water media. The designs are based on those produced by medieval scribes and make lovely cards and gifts. Materials Needed: Notebook, file folder.

Writing believable, relatable dialogue is an art-form, but fortunately there are some tried-and-tested methods and techniques you can use right now to improve the dialogue in your novel or script. In this fast paced session, you’ll learn how to turn ordinary words into compelling dialogue, use clean dialogue tags, differentiate character voices, use dialogue instead of narrative/voiceover, avoid dialogue “dumps,” and be real, but not boring.
